19 www.sandridge-pc.gov.uk WINTER 2023 Education news I t has been a very busy start to the school year at Wheat!elds Infants’ and Nursery School, which started with some swashbuckling fun in September when the children in Reception and Nursery celebrated “Talk like a Pirate Day”. The children enjoyed some amazing pirate learning with art, stories and poems. Later in the term, they enjoyed meeting the animals from Ark Farm who paid a visit to school. This was linked to their learning about understanding the world. They met a donkey, pygmy goats, lambs, a pig, the farm dog and chickens and ducks. It was great to hear the children talking about all the animals. We are very proud that our school has been invited by the Music Service to become a Music Mark School. They have recognised the value that we place on music and have added us to the growing number of schools across the UK who are supported as a Music Subject Association. As part of our focus on Music, the children in Year 1 have been learning to play djembe drums, and Year 2 have been learning to play glockenspiels. Community This term, we have been celebrating our involvement with the local community and we were overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone in school who donated groceries for our local food bank when we celebrated Harvest Festival. We were also thrilled to have collaborated with the The Hospice of St. Francis Charity Shop in the Quadrant for one of their recent window displays. Our children designed some fabulous masks that were displayed as part of their Halloween window display and the children were very excited to see their creations on show. Our !rework display last month, organised by our parents association, the Friends of Wheat!elds Infants and Nursery, was a resounding success and the aim is for it to become an annual event. Continuing our theme of community involvement, Year 2 have performed some Christmas Carols outside of St. Mary’s Church, and our Year 1 children are looking forward to visiting the residents of Parkside View later in the term to perform some festive entertainment. In the new year we will be holding our open mornings for prospective Nursery children who can apply to join us in September 2024 from now until the deadline of 23 rd February 2024.
